Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata)

The Sooty Terns are the most abundant bird species on the island and nest in their thousands during spring and summer. It is quite easy to spend time at places like Ned's Beach and Middle Beach during the breeding season and witness the adult birds constantly feeding of the young chicks. It is at this time of the year it is virtually impossible to climb Mt Eliza due to the fact that the track becomes overrun with nesting birds.
